RescueTime review

Here's a question most of us can probably answer, at least approximately: How many hours do you spend in front of your computer every week? But here's a trickier one: How much of that time do you spend doing productive work, and how much of it do you spend watching cat videos? RescueTime ($9 per month) is an online service that tries to answer this question, and sometimes even succeeds.

CrashPlan+ review

With the demise of MobileMe upon us, you’ll need to come up with a new backup solution if this Apple service is your current backup method of choice. If you’re a fan of online, cloud-based backups, then CrashPlan is one to consider.

NetworkClean review

Facebook is a lot of fun...until you realize that much of the information posted there could be found by someone you might not want to see it. Like your boss, or potential boss. Your mother, or your potential mother-in-law. Ever wonder how your Facebook page might make you look to someone else? NetworkClean can show you: This free service scans and monitors your Facebook account, alerting you to any problems lurking there.

Daminion Standalone review

Back in the days of traditional film photography, it was easy to see when you had many photos: Shelves full of albums (or shoeboxes bursting with prints) were visible. Today, you could have hundreds of thousands of photos in your collection, and they would take up next to no physical space. Organizing all of those photos, however, is still a massive undertaking. Daminion Standalone is a free application that tries to help you tag and sort your photos in ways that make sense.

Breezi review

Just because Microsoft no longer makes FrontPage doesn't mean people no longer need a visual way to create websites. On the contrary: Breezi (currently in free Beta) joins the ranks of visual website creation tools alongside Wix, Weebly, Jimdo, and many other tools. Breezi may not be completely unique, but it sure has style.

HijackThis review

Reviewing HijackThis is like talking to an old friend for the first time after a lengthy communications hiatus. I lost track of the program's development shortly after Trend Micro took it over. Not that I or my repair colleagues ever stopped using it--it's too darn handy when it comes to spotting malware and removing detritus from your system. Now, Trend Micro has placed the program in open source, so perhaps development will continue beyond the version 2.0.4 that it's been stuck at for a while.

Avira Free Antivirus review

Avira Free Antivirus 2012 is fast and is unlikely to scare you with false-positive warnings about legitimate files, but it is also worse than average at detecting malware, and its interface is overly complicated.

Angry Birds Space review

The Angry Birds franchise needs little introduction. What started as a simple physics-based game became a cultural phenomenon, replete with Angry Birds dolls, keychains, and other merchandise. Rovio has updated Angry Birds before, with the release of Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio (a tie-in for the movie), but while those updates introduced new levels and graphics, they kept the same basic gameplay and physics. With Angry Birds Space, Rovio is trying something truly new, creating a game that feels fresh, and even addictive.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1 review

Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1 is something of a mixed bag. I like its interface, and it is reasonably good at cleaning up infections, but it falters at stopping new malware, and it plods through its chores.

Clearswift SECURE Web Gateway 2.5 review

We were eager for this box to arrive from Clearswift, this kind of kit gets us excited. This gateway is available as a pre-installed hardware appliance, virtualised gateway for VMWare, or software ISO images for installation on your own hardware. The version we reviewed was the "own hardware option" deployed on a 1RU Dell Server.
