A little over a year ago, many people talked about Apple's diminutive Mac mini in the past tense: As of the beginning of March 2009, it had been 19 long months since the previous update to Apple's most compact computer, and that update itself came after 11 months of waiting. Two updates in two and a half years? It was easy to believe that the Mac mini had become just as much of a "hobby" as the Apple TV.

The specs for the Supermicro SuperBlade chassis and blades are nowhere near those of the Dell, HP, or IBM blade systems we tested, but then again, neither is the price. The SuperBlade is an incredibly affordable way into blade servers, and though it won't draw many oohs and aahs, it will provide a solid platform for just about any small to medium-size IT endeavor.

In our January 2007 blade server shoot-out, Dell was the dark horse candidate that posted impressive performance numbers, but fell short on features compared to the other solutions. In the intervening few years, Dell has clearly taken the time to polish up its solution. The Dell PowerEdge M1000e is far more attractive and functional than its predecessors.

One look at the HP BladeSystem c7000 blade chassis and you understand why HP sells a lot of blades. The unit is aesthetically pleasing, extremely solid, and well appointed, with an LCD panel for chassis monitoring and control, eight half-width I/O slots in the back, six 2400-watt power supplies, and 10 fans. As with the Dell, all of this is tightly power controlled, as the chassis can dynamically turn power supplies on and off to best meet the electrical load, while reducing energy consumption during lighter loads.
