HijackThis review

Reviewing HijackThis is like talking to an old friend for the first time after a lengthy communications hiatus. I lost track of the program's development shortly after Trend Micro took it over. Not that I or my repair colleagues ever stopped using it--it's too darn handy when it comes to spotting malware and removing detritus from your system. Now, Trend Micro has placed the program in open source, so perhaps development will continue beyond the version 2.0.4 that it's been stuck at for a while.

Avira Free Antivirus review

Avira Free Antivirus 2012 is fast and is unlikely to scare you with false-positive warnings about legitimate files, but it is also worse than average at detecting malware, and its interface is overly complicated.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1 review

Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1 is something of a mixed bag. I like its interface, and it is reasonably good at cleaning up infections, but it falters at stopping new malware, and it plods through its chores.

Ad-Aware 10 review

Over the years, Lavasoft's Ad-Aware product line has made itself a name in the highly competitive anti-malware marketplace, and today's release of version 10 introduces a new UI, new pricing ($12 per year for Personal, $36 per year for Pro), and more features--and a new name--for the popular free edition. This blog item discusses only the new design and features. PCWorld has not tested yet tested Ad-Aware 10's effectiveness in fighting malware.

AllClear ID review

There are a lot of tools out there for finding out whether your identity has been compromised. But the price of that eternal vigilance can put a serious crunch on your time--assuming you that even know where to find all those tools to guard against identity theft.

McAfee Mobile Security for Android review

As threats to mobile devices sharply increase, a good security app can make a huge difference. McAfee Mobile Security, the mobile version of McAfee's desktop software, can help protect your phone or tablet from mobile malware, phishing, and device theft. McAfee provides a free seven-day trial, but requires a £24.99 yearly subscription if you decide to keep using the service once thereafter.

Avast Mobile Security review

Avast Mobile Security provides antivirus, web, and app protection for your Android-based phone or tablet. Though the software isn't optimised for tablets, Avast says that it expects to offer better tablet support sometime in the first quarter of 2012. On phones, Avast provides features such as SMS and call filtering, remote locking, and remote wiping. For rooted phones and tablets, it offers a firewall and enhanced uninstall protection.

Kaspersky TDSSKiller review

Recently I spent some time rescuing my sister-in-law's laptop from some seriously nasty malware. Even after running utilities like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then using UnHide to restore the system's missing icons and folders, something was hijacking the Web browsers. Whenever I'd click a link in Internet Explorer or Firefox (the latest versions of both, FYI), some malicious bit of code would redirect the browser to a phishing site. That's hijacking in a nutshell, and it's extremely frustrating.

AVG Internet Security 2012 review

AVG Internet Security 2012 (£40 for one year and one PC) does a very good job of keeping a PC safe, but unfortunately some of the other 2012 internet security products do an astounding job.

G Data InternetSecurity 2012 review

G Data InternetSecurity 2012 (£34.95 for a one-year, single-PC licence) is the best of the 2012 crop of security suites. Although its interface isn't terribly friendly to beginners, G Data's suite put up some of the best malware detection and blocking scores in the history of our testing.
