The HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451nw color laser printer has nice output and is relatively speedy considering the price. However, it suffers from the same pricey toner of most entry-level colour laser printers, and it lacks the automatic duplexing found in HP's slightly more expensive 'dn' and 'dw' variants.

The Samsung ML-2955DW monochrome laser printer is notable for its very low street price (£128 as of February 8, 2012) and its full network connectivity, namely USB, ethernet, and Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, the expensive toner restricts it to low-volume use.

In particular, its above-average capacity and paper handling, top-notch performance, and very good output will fulfill the needs of a small office or home office well. A few setup and interface miscues are all that stand between this product and SOHO nirvana.

The Canon Pixma MG8220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One is the company's flagship consumer color inkjet multifunction (print/copy/scan), with a flagship price (around £200). High-end perquisites include integrated slide and film scanning, CD/DVD printing, and a six-tank ink cartridge system (CMYK plus photo gray and black) that produces excellent glossy photo prints. For the price, however, we expect better than the subpar plain-paper color graphics it produced in tests. And unfortunately, its space-agey touch control panel leaves no room for an automatic document feeder, a feature that is becoming common among its competitors.

Canon's Pixma MX410 colour inkjet multifunction printer offers a classic set of budget tradeoffs. For a low price, you get Wi-Fi connectivity, an automatic document feeder (ADF) with manual two-sided scanning and superb text output. Features are otherwise minimal, however, and the black ink is expensive. In ink costs, Kodak's ESP C310 is a better deal in this price range (albeit with other limitations).

The Canon ImageClass MF8380Cdw costs more than its cousin, the ImageClass MF8080Cw, but is an infinitely better product. It's faster, it costs less to operate, and it produces better output.

Samsung's CLP-775ND colour laser printer has power to spare for a busy workgroup, at a midrange price. It breaks no new ground in output quality, photos are a challenge for it as they are for most colour lasers, but aside from that it's a printer well worth considering.
