Among built-to-order gaming PCs, Alienware is about as close as one gets to a household name, and the brand is largely synonymous with huge black boxes covered in garish blinking lights. The new Alienware X51 ($999 as configured, as of February 3, 2012) is a marked departure from that routine, cutting both costs and girth to deliver a machine that's palatable to the masses but doesn't lose any of that gamer cred.

The Dell Vostro 460 is a speedy business desktop equipped with Intel's recently launched Sandy Bridge processor. It starts at £382, but our review configuration which came with a 21.5-inch widescreen monitor is priced at £784. The system we reviewed packs a decent feature set, including an Intel Core i7-2600 processor, 4GB of RAM (upgradable to 16GB) and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

At $1099, the V3 Move 3DS sits in a precarious position. It's too pricey to rank as a budget desktop, despite being saddled with a relatively dinky Core i3 processor. And despite its stellar gaming performance (more on that in a bit), a comparatively paltry WorldBench 6 score leaves V3's cube fumbling around the middle of the mainstream desktop pack. But if you're sold on 3D gaming, or if you need a speedy, portable rig to haul to your next LAN session, V3's Move 3DS is a compelling option.

The differences between the recently released Mac Pros and the 2009 models they replace are minimal, an update really, with graphics and processor speeds brought up to 2010 standards. If there is one new specification that sets this generation apart from previous Mac Pros (and all previous Mac, for that matter), it is the new, double-digit number of processing cores available in one system.
