Safety camera alerts are preloaded and the Garmin nüvi 765T tells you the speed you should be travelling as you approach one. Another boon for legal sticklers: built-in Bluetooth connectivity lets you make and receive calls from a paired mobile handset using only the Garmin's touchscreen interface.

You don't get speech-to-text voice-recognition, which would completely obviate the need to take your hands from the wheel, but while this was a neat feature of the Garmin nüvi 765T's pricier sibling, we're aren't convinced this feature alone makes that device worth the extra cash.

As well as the photo viewing and audiobook and music playback options, there's a nüvi photo-navigation feature. You first need to register your Garmin nüvi 765T, then upload images from Google Panoramio. You can access geo-tagged snaps through the Picture Viewer or Favourites menu. This feature has potential if you have trouble recalling addresses, but calls for more forward planning than we'd like.

Build quality is good, with no hardware buttons on the Garmin nüvi 765T's slim casing save for a power/lock slider. The 4.3in screen is now a standard feature at this price point, and it's more than adequate for displaying information in a clear manner.

The interface itself is very simple, greeting the user with two large icons - 'Where to?' and 'View Map'. Settings and multimedia options can be found under the Garmin nüvi 765T's Tools menu, along with an ecoRoute feature that provides information about your average fuel economy.

A small windscreen mount makes use of a ball joint, letting you place the device at any angle you wish. The Garmin nüvi 765T's car charger plugs directly into this cradle, rather than to the device itself. We weren't as taken with it as with the TomTom's sleek EasyPort model, however, which holds the XL snug to the screen.

An SD Card is an optional extra if you plan to make frequent use of the multimedia features, although the internal memory seems rather generous with 1.24GB spare.
