Find the best barebones NAS box

Network-attached storage boxes are commonly sold already pre-configured with drives, but many companies offer the option for you to build your NAS up yourself. These storage manufacturers sell their NAS devices bare, so you can populate them with the capacity and types of hard drives you prefer.

Whichever box you choose, don't overbuy. Units vary drastically in speed, features, hardware and price, but all of the ones reviewed here can serve multimedia across a home network, having the software to do so. We looked at five boxes, one each from D-Link, Patriot and QNAP, plus two from Synology.
