Pros:

Provides pre-failure fault identification; excellent value; simple installation; excellent documentation; straightforward to use once you've figured out the right commands.The ability to delve into low-level settings on tape drives and multi-disk enclosures is useful

Cons:

Potentially destructive if used inadvisedly; command line is rather cryptic; many features are device- or vendor-specific.
