A few years ago, a home media server mainly consisted of an old computer hooked up to a nearby set of speakers and an S-video cable that snaked out to a TV set. If you wanted to watch a movie or listen to music, you navigated with a mouse via the Windows desktop and fired up Media Player, or maybe VLC, put the program into full-screen mode, selected your title from a subdirectory and trundled off.

Nero 11 continues the multimedia creation and burning suite's evolution into a friendlier product. Nero already offered a powerful set of programs for creating, editing, transcoding, and burning video and photo slideshow discs, as a well as for editing audio and backing up your data. With this latest release (list price $100 for the standard version; $129 for the Platinum edition; both as of 11/8/11), Nero revamped and improved several of the major components, and linked them via a common media file browser. As a result, the suite feels more like a cohesive product, rather than an ad-hoc collection of components.

The new Movie Trailer feature of iMovie '11 is a great way to demo the program because it packs all the strengths of the video editor into a compact, visually arresting package. But like a real movie, there is more to iMovie '11 than the trailer and thankfully all of the best scenes aren't given away in the teaser.

If my Facebook suggestions and invitations are any indication, the Farmville and Café World fads are nowhere near over, so it's no surprise that The Playforge is adding its own real time farming simulation game into the mix with the new Zombie Farm app for iPhone and iPod Touch. In the game, players are given a plot of land to transform into a zombie-infested goldmine, all the while checking back to the app frequently in order to tend to crops that are on a strict harvest schedule.
