I've used many GFI products over the last 10 years, and in that time, I've found most of them to be user-friendly and a good value, though they tend to be aimed at small and midsize Microsoft Windows shops. GFI EventsManager follows that tradition while also supporting Linux and Unix clients.

ArcSight has been a pioneer in the security event management business since 2000, and the company's leadership shows in the richness, flexibility, and maturity of its offering. The product lineup is led by the ArcSight Enterprise Security Manager and Logger event log management appliances, although the company has smaller appliances and companion modules for identity-based and compliance monitoring.

I found the LogLogic MX appliance to be among the easiest-to-use management products, and it has all the functionality most administrators would need for basic log management. The GUI is simple and uncluttered. I didn't find myself looking to help manuals nearly as much as I did in other products.

Trustwave's main competitive advantage is combining SIEM (security information and event management) and log management in one, relatively cheap appliance. While many vendors have begun bringing SIEM and log management functionality together, few do it as affordably as Trustwave, though you'll generally need to look beyond the starting prices to see it.

It's fair to say that I learned a lot about log management through Splunk. A few years ago, I used Splunk for a variety of computer security applications, most notably to collect and forward events across a wide range of machines. Picking it up again two years later, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Splunk has become feature-rich and very handy beyond its early origins.

Unlike the other products in this review that combine log management and event management functionality, NitroSecurity wraps the two feature sets in two separate appliances. Because NitroSecurity's NitroView Enterprise Log Manager (ELM) data is viewable only through a linked NitroView Enterprise Security Manager (ESM), my review of its log management functionality required testing both appliances.
