A few years ago, a home media server mainly consisted of an old computer hooked up to a nearby set of speakers and an S-video cable that snaked out to a TV set. If you wanted to watch a movie or listen to music, you navigated with a mouse via the Windows desktop and fired up Media Player, or maybe VLC, put the program into full-screen mode, selected your title from a subdirectory and trundled off.

If my Facebook suggestions and invitations are any indication, the Farmville and Café World fads are nowhere near over, so it's no surprise that The Playforge is adding its own real time farming simulation game into the mix with the new Zombie Farm app for iPhone and iPod Touch. In the game, players are given a plot of land to transform into a zombie-infested goldmine, all the while checking back to the app frequently in order to tend to crops that are on a strict harvest schedule.

RealPlayer, the venerable (if oft-maligned) multimedia playback software is back with a new beta. With the latest version of the software, it's number 14 but is simply being called RealPlayer, RealNetworks has enhanced the player's mobile capabilities, smartly taking aim at Android, BlackBerry and Nokia phones that lack the native media syncing solution that Apple's iPhone and iPod enjoy with iTunes.

Apple has apparently added “update iTunes” to its yearly September media event to-do list. Along with a new iPod nano and iPod shuffle, a revamped iPod touch, and a refreshed Apple TV, Apple delivered the third iTunes version update in as many years, iTunes 10.
