Truphone offers an app that can be downloaded on to the T-Mobile G1, Apple iPhone or iPod touch, and a number of Nokia handsets to allow users to make free calls to other Truphone users in a Wi-Fi hotspot or make cheap international calls to landlines and mobiles from any Wi-Fi hotspot in the world, by routing the calls through the internet.
Nokia, iPhone, G1 and BlackBerry users that are not within a Wi-Fi-enabled area in their home country can used the Truphone Anywhere applet. This lets you make an international call by routing as much of the call as possible over the internet, making it even cheaper for phone abroad.
You pay your network operators charges to call the Truphone server in your home country and then the rest of the call is charged at standard TruPhone rates.
Calling landlines is priced at 3p per minute while mobile calls are from 15p per minute. Text messages cost 10p each. Alternatively, Truphone users can sign up to the TruSaver package for £2.50 per month and make calls to mobiles for 12.5p per minute and to landlines for 1.2p per minute.
The extensive list of Nokia handset compatible with the Truphone service includes the Nokia E51, E60, E61, E61i, E65, E66, E70, E71, E90, N80i, N81, N81 8GB, N82, N95, and N95 8GB.
Emergency calls can be made from Truphone handsets but, as with the Tesco TalkWi-Fi service, they will be routed through the network provider.
