Asus G75VW review

Asus probably isn't the first company that comes to mind when you think of big desktop replacement laptops that are optimised for gaming. The Asus G75VW, however, is the latest in a long line of gaming laptops produced by the company under the "Republic of Gamers" brand. Considering that gaming laptops often go for well over £2000, this big machine is relatively budget-priced, and it isn't awful - but it isn't great, either. Although it suffers in general performance, audio quality, and battery life, it has a nice screen, and the price may be right.

MSI GT70 review

The MSI GT70 is a formidable everyday performer, as well as an excellent gaming machine. When the unit's closed, it even looks the part. Flip it open, and MSI might have been better off shooting for an under-the-radar aesthetic rather than incorporating what look like elements from a Cadillac body kit. Appearances aside (beauty is in the eye of the beholder), the GT70 is a very powerful laptop with only minor foibles.

HP Folio 13 review

The HP Folio 13 is a sleek 13.3-inch Ultrabook that comes in a slim profile measuring just 18mm thick. HP positions it as a business-grade laptop that eschews an optical drive for portability and crams in a battery that the company says is good for up to 9.5 hours. The HP Folio 13 also includes a number of business-centric capabilities ignored by other computer makers.

Dell XPS 13 review

For several months I used a little Lenovo ThinkPad X220 running Windows 7 and had a great experience - it felt rock solid and responsive, with fantastic battery life. Then I switched to a MacBook Pro, and now that I've gotten used to it, I actually find it more or less a wash between the two (sorry, Apple fanboys).

Samsung Series 5 Ultra review

The Samsung Series 5 Ultra is the company's first foray into the Ultrabook market (if you don’t count the Series 9, which predates the Ultrabook brand). There's just one problem: It weighs nearly 4lbs, and measures 0.82-inch thick. In other words, this 14-inch laptop is closer to a regular ultraportable than it is to an Ultrabook.

HP Envy 15 (early 2012) review

Last year's Envy laptops were a bit of a disappointment. The design that wowed me in 2010 had grown stale by 2011; at that point, the rest of the world had caught up to and surpassed the Envy's design, while HP was content to update only the system's internal components. The new Envy 15 and 17, which HP released right at the end of 2011, finally feature a whole new design. For the most part, it's great, but a few nagging issues keep the system from being an easy recommendation.
