For several months I used a little Lenovo ThinkPad X220 running Windows 7 and had a great experience - it felt rock solid and responsive, with fantastic battery life. Then I switched to a MacBook Pro, and now that I've gotten used to it, I actually find it more or less a wash between the two (sorry, Apple fanboys).

The Samsung Series 5 Ultra is the company's first foray into the Ultrabook market (if you don’t count the Series 9, which predates the Ultrabook brand). There's just one problem: It weighs nearly 4lbs, and measures 0.82-inch thick. In other words, this 14-inch laptop is closer to a regular ultraportable than it is to an Ultrabook.

Last year's Envy laptops were a bit of a disappointment. The design that wowed me in 2010 had grown stale by 2011; at that point, the rest of the world had caught up to and surpassed the Envy's design, while HP was content to update only the system's internal components. The new Envy 15 and 17, which HP released right at the end of 2011, finally feature a whole new design. For the most part, it's great, but a few nagging issues keep the system from being an easy recommendation.

When Dell means business, it doesn't kid around. The Dell Latitude E5420 is one of the toughest-looking corporate laptops I've seen that isn't specifically designated as ruggedised. From its dark grey, brushed anodised aluminium case to its magnesium-based insides and sturdy looking hinges and lock, everything about it screams "hardcore business tool."

Building high performance gaming components into a 15-inch laptop chassis is an exercise in compromise. What you get is a little less bulk than a 17-inch desktop replacement, and equivalent performance. But those high performance components require robust cooling and a greater amount of internal volume, which translates into more size and weight.
