There are two ways to look at the Cisco SA 520 network security appliance. On one hand, it offers a solid array of features: 65Mbps IPSec VPN throughput, 100Mbps overall throughput, integrated firewall (limited to 100 rules), built-in filtering for common services like IM and P2P networking, SSL VPN, IPS, DDNS and multi-WAN support. On the other hand, it has nearly no relation to the rest of Cisco's security solutions.

Prices for SonicWall products are hard to pin down because, while the firewall and router have no client licence fees, adding support for security features such as enhanced client antivirus and anti-spyware, VPN Client Windows, UTM SSL VPNs, and a few other options need user licences. Figure around the £250 to £280 range to start, depending on whether you add wireless support, and tally up your options from there.

The Skybox Risk View platform is comprised of two products: the Skybox Secure 4.5 for risk exposure and security profile analysis, and threat alert management, and Skybox Assure that manages the firewall and performs network compliance auditing. The platform application is scalable and is made of the Skybox View Server, Skybox View Collector, Skybox View Manager and Skybox View Dictionary. The dictionary is the database for definitions and profiles for vulnerabilities, threats, worms and network security policies.

With RedSeal Network Advisor 4.1 and Vulnerability Advisor 4.1, you can automate the process of analysing, identifying, quantifying and mitigating risk and vulnerabilities in complex networks. Network Advisor uses plugins to import configuration files from each supported device. We liked that we could create a unified network topology map with a best practices analysis and solutions for remediation after we imported risk and vulnerability analyses.

SonicWALL recently started shipping six new firewalls to replace the low-end of its product line. The new firewalls are the TZ100, TZ200 and TZ210, each also available with 802.11n wireless integration. This product release completes SonicWALL's transition to the Cavium Networks' Octeon processor line, putting all of their firewalls on the same code base and with a similar feature set.
