Xandros Presto Linux

Price = $19.95 for five licenses

Presto promises the 'instant-on' OS experience and it delivers it with remarkably little fuss or danger. Now why couldn't Windows have been made like that?

Pros:

Good way to revive an old XP system; Plenty of add-on apps; Very fast booting and shut-down

Cons:

Do you need to revive that old XP system anyway?

I setalled Presto ,today, onto my Windows XP Home computer.I wanted to learn about Linux. This Presto Linux ver does nothing for me.I will get an advanced full blown ver of Linux, next.

I am using Xandros Presto as I am writing this, and I can tell you it is awesome. I am an "on-again, off-again" Linux user...when I use Linux, I use Ubuntu...but for the most part, I prefer XP/Vista. Presto has been a breath of fresh air for my aging 1 GHz Athlon (with 512 MB RAM). Even with such an old processor, Presto boots-up READY in 17 seconds, and shuts down in 2. Overall, I am quite happy that I spent the $20 to buy a license. Take note...to change settings, or to manually open some other software, etc...learn to use CTRL-ALT-T to get to the command line. Nice job, Xandros!

I tried Presto and it failed for me. The fast booting was great, and the App Store; an idea borrowed from the iPhone, is a great help for Linux nOObs. But that's where the joy ended. Basic configuration was a pain, because you had to use command line prompts to open the control panel (and who can remember what that convoluted command is?). There's virtually no documentation, and the user forums are like a graveyard (at least they were for me). Finally, it hosed my Wifi -- it would only work in Presto, not when I booted into Windows. I ended up uninstalling Presto and I had to re-install Windows, which wasn't easy given that I don't have an optical drive for my netbook. Grrrr! Presto does not work on either of the two Dell Mini-9s we tested it out on. Presto does have a "try before you buy" feature though, so you're not out any $$ if it doesn't work on your system.

I have been using Presto for the past week and although I am not techie - seems to be just ticket for the old XP PC in our basement. I had never used Open Office before and it works like a charm. Very cool product.

Please note that $19.95 price is for installation on a single computer -- installation five computers would require purchase of five licenses.
