Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 review

Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 (£49.99 for one year and three PCs) placed fourth in a recent survey of 2012 security suites. Although it finished outside the top three, it's a solid all-around suite that will do an effective job at keeping you safe.

Bitdefender Internet Security 2012 review

Bitdefender Internet Security 2012 (£39.99 on three PCs for a year) captured the highest rating in our malware detection, blocking, and removal tests compared to its rivals. Those fantastic results, combined with the software's excellent interface, make it a great product.

Webroot SecureAnywhere Essentials 2012 review

Webroot's SecureAnywhere Essentials 2012 (£39.95 for one year, three PCs at the time of writing) offering shows lots of promise. SecureAnywhere represents a complete overhaul of Webroot's product line, with a brand-new interface and new internals to go along with it. The package is fast, and it's good at catching malware before the invader reaches your PC, but a higher-than-average false-positive rate and disappointing system-cleanup results keep it from ranking any higher.

OmniPlan 2.0.3 review

Most of us can usually get by with tools such as Cultured Code’s Things ( Macworld rated 4.5 out of 5 mice ) or Hog Bay Software’s TaskPaper ( Macworld rated 4 out of 5 mice ) for managing to-do lists or other day-to-day tasks. But large-scale projects that involve the coordination of a multitude of resources over several months or years require something more, like the Omni Group’s OmniPlan. OmniPlan is designed to help you take in the broad view of a project while still keeping you focused on the details necessary to make sure all your resources are in place and the project is completed on time.

BCWipe 5 review

BCWipe 5.0 is a suite of tools and utilities that help provide security by making sure that deleted files are truly gone. It's generally well-known that "deleting" a file in Windows doesn't truly erase it; what's less well known is how easy it is to recover files, or partial files, even after the Recycle Bin has been emptied and it seems the file is gone for good. BCWipe ($40, 25-day free trial with limitations) works by overwriting the space formerly occupied by a file with various schema of random data, as per the user's desire.

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 2012 review

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall has been arguably the most popular third-party firewall for Windows. It's a two-way firewall that's designed to help protect your PC from hackers getting in and any malicious programs on your PC from sending data out. However, it doesn't protect against Web-based exploits like some (but not all) other firewall solutions do. It does include anti-phishing to help detect and block dangerous sites, though. Additionally, it includes 2GB of free online storage for backing up your files, also offered separately from ZoneAlarm.

FoxIt PhantomPDF Business 5.0 review

Often, you can get by perfectly well with a budget-minded software application that lacks fancy features you may never need. FoxIt's PhantomPDF 5.0 Business (around £77 excluding VAT) is the epitome of such middlebrow software: It costs a third of what the blueblood Adobe Acrobat X does, and it can handle most everyday PDF editing tasks.
